1945, the war is over. Germany is in ruins and occupied by allied armies. The French with their 6 million inhabitants zone are now facing the question all occupying forces have to deal with: how can you rebuild a country where a majority of the population has supported nazism ?
To face the Soviets and preserve themselves from future German domination ambitions, De Gaulle has only one solution: insert the rebuilt Germany in a new European sphere. So denazification is botched. A few noisy trials conceal a gigantic 'laundering machine' that clears all suspects- even Leni Riefenstahl, Hitler's personal film director will not be sentenced.
With testimonies of those who lived through the period, with the historians and archives, the film tells the original way the French deal with the problem.
